Services for young people

Substance Misuse Advice and Referral Team (SMART) is an under 22s service for young people living in Salford who are having problems with their drug or alcohol use. The team offer support, advice and information about different types of drugs and also offer a variety of treatment options. Support can be provided by telephone, text or on a one to one basis. A variety of diversionary activities are also commissioned by the Salford Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) to provide alternatives to drug and alcohol use. Training is available for a range of professionals working with young people including teachers, learning mentors, teaching assistants, school nurses and Connexions Personal Advisers.

Schools
Salford DAAT, in partnership with the Children's Services directorate and the Primary Care Trust, are responsible for providing drug and alcohol advice and support to schools.

Support available to schools includes:

  • Development of lesson plans
  • Development of drugs policies
  • Managing drug related incidents
  • Working with external visitors/contributors
  • Teacher training
  • Development of specialist drugs and alcohol projects, eg a peer alcohol education project
