Day care service

Day centres are buildings which offer hot food, friendship, support and activities. Some day centres also offer a bathing service, for people who cannot bath themselves at home.

Each day centre has its own unique atmosphere and the activities in each centre may vary. These might include:

  • Exercise sessions
  • Healthy eating advice
  • Games to promote good movement
  • Hair and beauty sessions
  • Arts and crafts
  • Education and training
  • Daily living skills

We are also supporting younger adults to set up groups and activities in their local communities rather than travelling to day centres. The individuals in each group have more choice and control about what they do - for example people with learning difficulties with an interest in health and fitness have set up a group which uses Fit City Clarendon's accessible gym equipment.

Who provides day services?

The city council provides much of the day services in the city, working with partners. There are also a number of other organisations, such as Age Concern Salford which provide day services.

What should I expect?

  • Day services should be provided by trained staff
  • You should be treated with respect and dignity
  • You should given choices about what you would like to do while using a day service
  • You should be able to try a day service to see if it is right for you.

How can I use a day service?

If you want us to arrange services for you, we will use your personal budget to arrange and pay for the service.

Usually, before we arrange services for you:

This will give you as much independence as possible and we wil ahve a better idea of how much support you will continue to need.

Some day centres for older people, not run by the council, have spaces for 'social members' - you can contact these centres directly.

Do day services cost?

Yes, you will have to pay something towards the cost of any service that you use. You can find out more information by reading paying for home care, day care and other services.

What should I do if I am not happy with the service?

In the first instance, you should talk to the manager. You may want to ask a family member or friend to help you with this. You can also ask an advocate to help.

If this has not worked, then you should contact our customer care manager, to make a complaint.
