The Deputy Leader of the city council is Councillor David Lancaster.

The deputy leader works closely with the Leader of the Council to provide vision, direction, and to deputise on issues when necessary for the Leader. He is responsible for liaising with other members of the cabinet, particularly where matters within this portfolio affect other aspects of council business or have a city-wide impact.

The Deputy Leader is responsible for ensuring appropriate consultation with partners and the community on matters within this portfolio.

The Deputy Leader supports the leader with the allocation of the roles and responsibilities to the Lead Members of the Cabinet.

Councillor Lancaster holds special cross-cutting portfolios for crime and disorder; electoral matters; property and is a member of the Greater Manchester Police Authority.
