Shaping Salford - Supplementary Planning Document: Design
‘Shaping Salford’, the council’s Design Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) sets out key guidelines to enhance the quality and distinctiveness of places when developing in Salford. The document seeks to raise the quality of the built environment and ensure that high standards of design are achieved throughout the city.
Shaping Salford specifically supplements the following saved Unitary Development Plan policies: ST1, ST8 and DES1 to DES11 and is supplemented by Salford Landscape Character Assessment.
Public consultation
The draft SPD was subject to a period of public consultation between 14 September and 25 October 2007. All comments received were taken into consideration and the SPD was amended where appropriate. A summary of all representations made during the consultation period can be downloaded below.
Adoption of the SPD
Shaping Salford - Supplementary Planning Document: Design was formally adopted by Salford City Council in March 2008.

Alternatively, hard copies of the SPD and supporting documents can be viewed from May 2008 in the following locations:
- All public libraries in Salford during their normal opening hours. Details of library opening times can be found on this website.
- Salford City Council Main Reception, Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton (open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm)

Design guidance for building front improvements
Specific design guidance has been prepared for shop fronts and conversions from shops to residential use. These set out good practice design principles which expand on those set out in Shaping Salford.
