14-19 Diplomas
The Diploma is a brand new qualification which combines theoretical study with practical and applied learning experience. It is an essential part of the 14 to 19 reform programme and will be available in 17 different subject lines by 2013.
Structure and assessment
The Diploma will provide students with an integrated programme of study made up of different courses and awards. The qualifications will be delivered at three different levels:
- Foundation Diploma (level one)
- Higher Diploma (level two)
- Advanced Diploma (level three)
All Diplomas will require students to achieve a minimum standard in English, mathematics and ICT, complete a project and do a minimum of 10 days work experience.
Lines of learning
Diplomas will eventually cover 17 different subjects, or lines of learning, and will become an entitlement for young people by 2013 - this means that every young person will be entitled to take a specific Diploma course regardless of whether it is delivered in their school or college.

Diploma gateway
Each Diploma line is introduced through a phased process of implementation. If an area wishes to deliver a certain Diploma, they must pass through a Diploma Gateway which assesses the areas readiness to deliver. It is expected that schools, colleges and other institutions wishing to deliver the same line of Diploma form partnerships or consortiums to oversee the delivery.
Further information on the Diploma Gateway and timeline for delivery is available in on the Diplomas in Salford page in the local developments section.
