Be Safe with DIY

How to avoid accidents

Lots of people carry out DIY jobs at home either because they enjoy it or to keep costs down. Unfortunately accidents do happen because people are unaware of potential dangers.

Many of these accidents could be avoided by following our useful tips and guidelines.

  • Do not use steps or ladders which are in poor condition
  • Do not use ladders that are not properly secured
  • Always read instructions carefully before starting any job or using any sophisticated tools
  • Always use an RCD adaptor when working with tools outside
  • Always switch electricity off at the mains before attempting any electrical job
  • Take care when using a blow torch near dry flammable materials
  • Make sure all electrical tools are earthed and the cables are in good condition
  • Do not try and adjust electrical tools whilst they are still plugged in
  • Always keep sharp tools safely covered
  • Use protective gloves, glasses, masks and headgear
  • Don’t use cleaning fluids/bleaches in a confined space
  • Store caustic chemicals and adhesives away from children
  • Don’t forget that accidents can also happen in the garden. As tools and equipment become more sophisticated greater care needs to be taken whilst indulging in Britain’s favourite pastime
  • Always use a circuit breaker when using lawn mower, hedge trimmer, strimmer etc
  • Take extra care when using hedge trimmers. Wear the correct protective gloves and glasses
  • Never use a chainsaw on trees unless you are fully competent. These tools are LETHAL
  • Never climb a tree unless your ladder is secured to a strong branch
  • Don’t do any potentially dangerous work alone
  • Wear strong shoes, preferably with protective toe caps, when laying paving etc
  • Make sure all canes in the garden have some covering on their tip such as cork. These canes can seriously damage your eyes if you bend down and catch one
  • Take care with garden chemicals. Store away from children. Wear protective goggles when spraying. Keep away from pets and other animals
  • Don’t light a bonfire or barbecue near to other dry flammable materials
  • Never use petrol or paraffin on a barbecue

If the worse should happen

  • Always keep a first aid kit handy
  • Keep calm. You can do no good if you are panicking
  • Don’t move the victim unless absolutely necessary
  • Unplug any electrical equipment
  • For burns and scalds immediately run cold water on skin for at least 10 minutes
  • Clean small cuts with water and soap. Do not use an antiseptic
  • Do not give the injured person anything to eat or drink unless it is milk if they have swallowed poison
  • Never try to make the casualty sick

If it looks at all serious call a doctor or 999 or go straight to the hospital.
