Domestic violence

Domestic abuse covers a whole range of physically, emotionally, sexually, verbally and financially abusive behaviour, within all types of relationships. It gets worse over time and it is rarely a one-off event.

If you are being abused, it is useful to talk to someone and get some support for yourself, even if you don't want to do anything about it.

Make a safety plan

  • Think about your safety and that of your children
  • Do you have access to a phone?
  • Would a neighbour phone for you if you needed help?
  • Do your children know how to phone 999 and get help?

If you have to leave your home in an emergency, do you have:

  • A safe place to stay?
  • Money for taxis or buses?
  • A bag with essential clothes?
  • Important papers and legal documents?
  • House keys?
  • Any medicines?
  • Key telephone numbers?
  • Do support agencies know how to contact you to check your safety?
