Salford Aimhigher
Aimhigher is a national programme which aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the awareness, aspirations and attainment of young people from under-represented groups.
The programme offers a wide range of activities to engage and motivate students who have the potential to go on to higher education but are under-achieving, undecided or lacking in confidence.
Aimhigher Salford is located within schools and learning development at Unity House and is part of the Aimhigher Greater Manchester partnership, which involves seven higher education institutions, ten local authorities, 23 colleges and more than 150 schools. At present, 14 schools and Salford City College are included in the borough's activities.
Much of the work in Salford focuses on developing a positive attitude to education on the part of young people and their families who may have little or no experience of higher education.
The programme also supports, challenges and stretches those pupils who are particularly gifted or talented to reach their highest potential. Many activities involve links between school/college/university departments through taster days, lectures, conferences, summer schools and the Salford Aimhigher mentoring model.
We have employed a wide range of different strategies to meet the demands of this initiative and in this sense the initiative is live and evolving, building on good practice and targeting support where most needed.
Aimhigher activities include:
- Mentoring - by both FE and HE students, student ambassadors and role models
- Joint activities/events where years 9 to 11 can work with post-16 students and undergraduates
- Drama performances on topics such as staying in learning, learning styles, life choices
- Visits/residentials to many local and distant higher education institutes
- Revision programmes - booster sessions, masterclasses, curriculum enrichment, workshops and taster sessions Activities designed to offer opportunities to experience different methods of learning in different environment
- Support for pupils and students on vocational programmes
- Information, Advice and Guidance for families to understand more about Higher Education and information on financial support
- In school/college activities involving wider range of pupils and students than the cohort
- Opportunities to work in areas which have proven to inspire and motivate young people e.g. fashion, law, sport, IT, games programming, media, performing arts/dance, medicine and many others including opportunities linked to MediaCityUK
