Environment and Community Safety directorate

Environment and Community Safety is responsible for a host of services in the city, from highly visible activities like bin collections and street cleaning to less noticeable tasks like dealing with contaminated land.

The Assistant Mayor for Housing and Environment is Councillor Gena Merrett and the directorate's strategic director is Ben Dolan.

The directorate has lead responsibility for the council's strategic objective of "ensuring the city has a clean, safe, healthy and sustainable environment" as part of the 7 Pledges initiative. It supports and contributes to other council objectives to improve the environment in Salford including personal health, recreation and leisure, and community safety.

The directorate actively pursues quality standards such as the government's Customer Service Excellence standard and has also attained Investor in People status.

We believe in firm but fair regulations, and a summary of our enforcement and prosecution policy is available on this website.
