This page provides links to a range of external organisations which deal with equality issues.

General
- Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) - the EHRC is the main organisation responsible for monitoring and promoting progress in equalities in the UK. It offers advice and guidance on best practice and equality law, commissions and publishes research and policy, and assists the public, private and voluntary sectors to improve their performance.
- Government Equalities Office (GEO) - the GEO is a government department, responsible for equalities legislation. It plays the central role in co-ordinating the UK government equality strategy, with especial focus on gender, transgender and sexual orientation. The current Home Secretary is also Minister for Women.
- British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) - BIHR is an independent charity which aims to promote the values of human rights and respect through research and policy, as well as developing and testing human rights led approaches in services and public spaces through targeted projects.
- Joseph Rowntree Foundation - the UK's largest independent social policy research and development charity. It supports a wide programme of research and development projects in housing, social care and social policy.
- Local Government Association - search for up to date issues concerning equality and diversity pertinent to local government.
- Office for National Statistics (ONS) - providing up to date statistics concerning the make up of the population of Britain.
Gender and transgender
- Fawcett Society - campaigns on gender equality, investigating the position of women in key areas of society such as justice equal pay and politics.
- The Gender Trust - offers information and support to transsexuals, as well as management guidelines for the employment of transsexuals.
Disability
- Office for Disability Issues (ODI) - the ODI is a cross government organisation whose aim is to ensure that disabled citizens and their issues are included in the design and delivery of government policy.
- Sense - works for deaf blind people across the UK.
- Access Group Resources - acts as an umbrella organisation for local groups across the country trying to improve accessibility and inclusion for disabled people in the built environment.
- Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) - offers practical support and advice to anyone with a sight problem and responds to enquiries concerning visual impairment.
- Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) - offers practical support and advice to anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing.
LGBT and sexual orientation
- Stonewall - campaigns and lobbies for equal rights for lesbian, gay and bisexual citizens. In addition, it publishes research and promotes initiatives to challenge homophobia and discrimination in locations such as schools, in the workplace and the military.
Age
- Age UK - formed from a merger of Help the Aged and Age Concern, the leading third sector organisation offers a wide range of services, and has offices across the country including Salford, where it delivers dementia befriending services. Age UK publishes significant research on older people, as well as advice and guidance for older people themselves.
- The Children's Society - a multi-disciplinary national charity, the society's activities include an extensive range of programmes directly working with such groups as disabled children, children at risk or on the streets and those in trouble with the law. Their work also involves research, policy briefings and awareness raising campaigns.
- C4EO - The Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People's Services aims to offer high quality research, advice and guidance into the delivery of effective services for children and young people, especially the most vulnerable.
Religion and belief
- The Interfaith Network - aims to promote better understanding between different faiths. It publishes the Directory of Interfaith organisations in the UK.
- North West Forum of Faiths - represents sub regional and local faith forums at a regional level and shares information and practice. The site lists the different forums and promotes interfaith week in the north west.
- Interfaith Week - takes place nationally every November with the objective of increasing understanding between different faiths and promoting dialogue with wider society about the contribution of faith communities.
Race
- Race Equality Foundation - a national independent charity promoting better practice in social work, care, health and housing.
- Race for Health - an NHS initiative aimed at tackling health inequalities experienced by BME communities through developing and sharing good practice among primary care, acute and mental health trusts.
Employment and equality
- Access to Work (ATW) - ATW provides practical advice and support to disabled people and their employers to help overcome work-related obstacles resulting from disability.
- Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) - ACAS provides advice and information on employment legislation, good practice and procedures in employee relations.
- The Employers' Forum on Disability - the employers' organisation focused on the issue of disability in the workplace.
Cohesion and citizenship
- Institute of Community Cohesion - a national policy and research agency, involving academic partners, NGOs and government. The institute aims to investigate the factors behind cohesive and unstable communities and the promote the tools to assist more harmonious relations.
