Extra care housing

Older man

Extra care housing gives you all the benefits of your own home, with flexible home care support when you need it. It can be the perfect choice if you need support to live independently.

There are five extra care housing schemes in Salford, where you rent your own fully-equipped apartment and also have the use of communal living and dining areas, when you want.

Extra care housing offers you more support than traditional sheltered housing and staff are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You use the support flexibly when you need it. For example, if you are ill, you may need more help with every day living such as washing/bathing, meal preparation or getting dressed.

How to apply for extra care housing

If you are interested in extra care housing, you will need to ask us to carry out an assessment of your needs. This will tell you whether extra care housing is the right option. You will also need to apply to one of more of the schemes. If extra care housing is not right for you, then we can tell you about other options - use the links on the left to see what is available.

There is a waiting list for extra care housing - most people will be offered somewhere within three months, but it can be longer, depending on when suitable homes become available. The more schemes you apply for, the shorter your wait is likely to be.

How much does it cost?

You will have to pay something towards the rent, council tax and a charge for the care and support you use. Some schemes also have service charges. Most people will get some help with these charges, depending on your needs and your income and savings. We can check to make sure you are getting all the benefits you are entitled to - most of your benefits should be used to pay the rent and the costs of the care and support.

Who provides extra care housing?

There are three organisations which between them run five schemes.

  • City West Housing Trust runs Monica Court, Eccles; Astley Court, Irlam; and Ninian Gardens, Irlam
  • The Retail Trust runs Moores House, Salford (this scheme is only for older people with a connection to the retail industry)
  • St Vincents runs Mount Carmel Court, Ordsall

Care and support is provided by the Retail Trust and DH Homecare at Moores House and by Comfort Call at the other schemes.
