Fairtrade Fortnight 2011

This year's Fairtrade Fortnight took place from Monday 28 February to Sunday 13 March and the Salford Fairtrade steering group were involved in lots of activities to celebrate.

Read on and discover what we did to spread the Fairtrade word in Salford.

Fairtrade celebration event

An event was held on Tuesday 8 March to celebrate the University of Salford achieving Fairtrade status and the renewal of Fairtrade status for the city of Salford and Salford City College.

The event included stalls selling a variety of Fairtrade products and speeches from Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation and Councillor Jim King, Chair of the Salford Fairtrade steering group.

Community shop

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight the Eccles Neighbourhood Management team kindly let us use a shop unit at Eccles Shopping Centre for a week to promote Fairtrade. During the week we displayed information about Fairtrade and told shoppers how they could get involved, it was a great success.

Schools activities

Four schools took part in a Show your Label competition:

  • The Cathedral School of St Peter and St John
  • Barton Moss Primary School
  • Salford Academy
  • Oasis Academy

The pupils were asked to design a new Salford Fairtrade label, their submitted artwork was displayed at the Fairtrade celebration event and at the community shop in Eccles.

Each school was given a £30 Co-operative voucher as a thank you for taking part.

University of Salford

Boosted by their award of Fairtrade status, the university were heavily involved over the fortnight. Their activities included Fairtrade information stands, raffles, pancake sales, a health and wellbeing event and coffee mornings.

Salford City College

The college also organised activities to celebrate Fairtrade in Salford. They organised a Fairtrade football match and supplied a delicious Fairtrade cake for the celebration event.

Pin Project

Alice, a member of the Salford Fairtrade steering group, is involved with the Pin Project. The project is based in Africa and supplies fairly traded jewellery.

During Fairtrade Fortnight Alice has been raising awareness of the project, giving talks at local schools, Salford City College and the Fairtrade celebration event.
