Flexible working

One of the benefits enjoyed by many of our employees at Salford City Council is flexible working. We believe our flexible working scheme is truly flexible as unlike other flexible working schemes there are no core hours!

Employees who are able to take advantage of the scheme are able to complete their working week any time between 7.00am and 7.00pm Monday to Friday. Full details of the flexible working policy.

Salford City Council recognise the importance of a work-life balance and have introduced this scheme to support its employees in achieving this.

Below are the experiences of two of our employees who have found this scheme to be particularly useful to them.

"As a working mum the policies provided by Salford City Council aimed at helping its staff to achieve a work life balance have made it possible for me to be there for my kids. The flexi-time scheme is superb, it has no core hours so I can work anytime between 7.00am and 7.00pm over the working week.

I choose to work from 7.00am to 3.00pm as this allows me to be there to collect my kids from the school gate, you can’t really put a monetary value on that. My managers don’t have any kids themselves, but they are very understanding about my situation and meetings, etc are arranged so that I am able to attend and I feel part of the team.

In all, I don’t know of anywhere else that can offer me the same work life balance package that Salford City Council does" - Alison Partington

"I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight how beneficial the Carers Leave and Flexitime Scheme has been for me. I am the main carer for my mother who experiences a number of difficulties including visual and hearing impairments. Unfortunately she often has to visit the hospital and would panic if she had to do this on her own, carers leave allows me to accompany her and speak to her doctors to make sure that I understand her healthcare needs.

In addition, I can arrange my working hours so that I can call in on my mother before work, during dinner, or work a shorter day under the Flexitime scheme. This also allows me to collect my granddaughter from school when my daughter is struggling.

Before I worked at Salford City Council I found it really difficult to get time off to be with my mother, mangers did not want me to bring my home life to work. But here they understand that it’s not always that easy and people have taken time to listen to me and understand about my mother's needs and my situation. This really helps to remove some of the pressure and helps me achieve a balance between home and work" - Catherine Walton
