Flood risk

The last major flooding event in Salford was in 1946. There was overtopping of the Irwell Flood defences in 1954 and 1980. Other major alerts occurred in 1995 and 1998 and the new Flood Basin at Littleton Road operated for the first time in January 2008. There are increasingly frequent local flooding incidents as a result of flash flooding and inadequate sewer capacity.
Everyone will be aware of the ongoing debate about climate change and the increasing risks from wetter winters and summer flash floods. Whilst the risks associated with flooding are increasing, they must be kept in perspective. Nevertheless, major incidents at locations such as Carlisle in 2005 and more recently at Cockermouth, Cumbria in 2009 demonstrate what can happen if caught unawares.
Salford is determined to take the necessary adaptation measures to deal with the future risks of flooding and to ensure that all appropriate planning and design measures are put in place to protect homes, businesses and their occupants.
These pages primarily provide information for dealing with flooding within the planning system. The flooding advice for householders page provides information on what to do if your home is affected by a flood.
