Furnished homes

Furnished Homes Service, part of Salford City Council, operates a scheme which gives new tenants, the opportunity to rent essential furnishings as part of their tenancy.

Where are furnished homes available?

Furnished homes are available in selected properties (flats and houses) throughout Salford. You may move into a home that has been furnished for a while, or we may be able to newly furnish it for you.

Can I apply for a furnished home?

You will be able to apply for a furnished home if you are in any of the following circumstances:

• Homeless or moving on from hostel accommodation
• Leaving care, hospital or other institution
• In severe financial difficulties
• Fleeing domestic abuse
• Setting up a new home after a relationship breakdown

What is provided in a furnished home?

A range of furniture is provided, depending on your needs and the property you are renting.

You will have the choice of a part or full furniture package depending on your needs and the property size.

Part package:

• Electric cooker
• Fridge or fridge freezer
• Carpets (flats only)

Full package:

• Electric cooker
• Fridge or fridge freezer
• Carpets (flats only)
• Armchair
• Sofa
• Table
• Chairs
• Wardrobe(s)
• Chest of drawers
• Bed(s)

How much does it cost?

Furniture is rented; the charge is added to the weekly rent for your property. If the property is already furnished, this charge has already been added to the weekly rent advertised on Salford Home Search.

The amount charged will depend on whether you have a part or full furniture package and the number and size of items provided.

You may be entitled to housing benefit, to pay for the service. We can work out if you are entitled housing benefit and we can help you complete the application form.

How do I apply?

First, you must register for a property, please visit the Salford Home Search website where properties are advertised as furnished or unfurnished.

If your bid for a City West property is successful, you will receive an offer of the property and will be invited to view it.

We will explain how the furnished homes scheme works, what your responsibilities are and what happens if your circumstances change.

We will tell you about other ways to furnish your home. You may decide that an unfurnished home suits your needs better.
