Ordsall Hall gardens

Ordsall Hall, © Nick Harrison

As part of its restoration, Ordsall Hall has had its grounds beautifully landscaped.

New features include a knot garden, Dig for Victory Garden, Herb Garden, ornamental borders and an orchard of historic varieties of apples, pears and medlars.

Fire up your imagination by visiting our collection of stone artefacts and guessing what they were. You can also try out the Barn Visualisation Point that will transport your mind's eye back to Ordsall Hall's rural past!

The location of the original moat is outlined and features two wooden causeways accompanied by the artworks of John Kennedy: ‘Swans' and ‘Causeway Edge'. The newly created Time Garden also features the art work ‘Timeline' by Lesley Fallais.

During 2011, we developed a composting demonstration area and a Heritage Garden with historic varieties of herbs, flowers and vegetables that can trace their roots back to Medieval and Tudor times.

There will be a selection of workshops, courses and events throughout the year on topics such as growing your own, using herbs, taking cuttings, using plants for health, and seed saving. See our workshops and events page for more information.

Weekend volunteer gardeners/garden stewards

Weekend volunteer gardeners and garden stewards are needed to help in our beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding Ordsall Hall. Experience welcomed but not essential as training will be provided.

We are looking for people who are willing to work one in every four to six weekends, from 12.30pm to 4.00pm on Sundays when we are open to the public.

Possible tasks may include:

  • Planting out
  • Tidying
  • Pruning
  • Watering
  • Weeding/deadheading
  • Welcoming visitors/answering questions

This is a great opportunity to build up your garden 'know-how', meet new people and enjoy the outdoors.
