Gifted and Talented

‘Giving every single child the chance to be the best they can be, whatever their talent or background, is not the betrayal of excellence; it is the fulfillment of it.'

‘Personalised learning: Building a new relationship with schools', a speech by David Miliband, Minister of State for School Standards, North of England Education Conference, Belfast, 8 January 2004

The 2005 White Paper, Higher Standards, Better Schools for All, set provision for gifted and talented learners clearly in the context of personalisation.

Within Salford, all schools are encouraged to evaluate and develop effective provision for gifted and talented pupils within the context of personalisation for all. The Institutional Quality Standards (IQS) provides a framework for this and has been used as the basis for consideration of whole-school strategies, which also addresses underachievement.
In addition, the Classroom Quality Standards (CQS) provide support for teachers in developing quality first teaching that will challenge and engage all pupils, including those identified as gifted and talented.

Salford has addressed the national expectation that all schools will have access to the support of a Leading Teacher for Gifted and Talented (G&T) Education. Training for Leading Teachers has been delivered to both Primary and Secondary colleagues within Salford during 2007-2009 and continues to be a priority. G&T Coordinators/Leading Teachers meet regularly for developmental meetings and share best practice.

An extensive programme of out of hours study support and learning beyond the classroom opportunities are provided through local and regional networks.

Each cluster of schools has close links with Salford Business Education Partnership who contribute towards an extensive enrichment and extra curriculum programme for gifted and talented pupils, which supports the teaching and learning programme within schools.
