Greater Manchester Services

The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities shares responsibilities services that cross the ten authorities areas, including public transport.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority was established to assess the public transport needs of the county and make policy decisions about public transport for services. It is made up of 33 Councillors who are appointed by the ten councils in Greater Manchester so Salford plays a part.
The transport authority provides a grant to the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) which is the body responsible for implementing the transport authority's policies.
The transport authority and GMPTE are responsible for:
- funding the concessionary fares scheme
- bringing together operators and councils to improve the quality of public transport
- planning and investing in the bus, train and Metrolink networks for the future
- providing information about public transport through telephone information lines, timetables, general publicity and Travelshops
- maintaining a network of subsidised bus services on routes not commercially viable working alongside train and Metrolink operators to improve services
- supporting the fully accessible Ring and Ride
- service and setting high standards of physical
- accessibility to other vehicles, stations and facilities
- building and maintaining local bus stations,
- shelters and stops.
