Greenspace audit

During 2005 and 2006 the city council conducted an audit of all types of greenspace regardless of quality, whether sites are in public or private ownership, or their degree of public accessibility. The types of greenspaces can be broadly divided into two broad categories:
Urban open space
- Sports pitches
- Outdoor formal facilities for youths and adults
- Formal urban parks
- Children's equipped play facilities
- Informal children's play space
Wider green space
- Country parks
- Semi-natural greenspaces
- Green corridors
- Allotments
- Cemeteries and churchyards
- Community woodland
- Urban fringe recreation areas
The audit identified a total of 1958.55 hectares of greenspace within Salford (1 hectare is approximately the size of a senior football pitch), or 19.6% of the total land area of the city. Approximately 58% of this area of greenspace is freely accessible to the general public, which compares well with neighbouring local authorities such as Trafford and Bury. The table below sets out the distribution of greenspace by Community Committee Area, in terms of absolute quantities and the area that is publicly accessible. More detailed information related to the audit of greenspace, local greenspace standards and policy guidance are available in Salford Greenspace Strategy Supplementary Planning Document
