Hotlink buttons

four examples of home page special feature buttons

The website home page has a panel of “feature” buttons. In the council these are generally referred to as "hotlinks". The panel is intended to enable home page promotion for 'of-the-moment' web content. Hotlinks can be pre-booked if required.

The hotlinks can be used to promote special one-off events such as the annual ‘Heritage Open Days’ event, or the city council elections or perhaps to draw attention to individual collections of web pages that business areas wish to promote for some particular purpose or reason. The facility may not be used to promote events or other activities where supporting web content does not exist.

Featured buttons cannot be permanent fixtures: links will have a limited lifetime, dependent upon other business requirements and any placement will be at the discretion of the web manager who retains full editorial control.

Supporting web content required

Naturally for this facility to work to the best advantage of all parties, supporting web pages must be available (and up to date), and contain appropriate customer-oriented information.

Commissioning a hotlink button

Artwork may only be commissioned from Paul McNamara in Creative Services (Marketing & Communications). The following guidelines apply:

  1. No more than 20 characters per button.
  2. If an image is required, it must be supplied. If there is no room to position the image either characters or image will be reduced or removed. Clip art images are not permitted.
  3. Cost centre code needs to be supplied at time of commission.
  4. The final design of the button will complement the overall website design and meet the corporate identity guidelines.
  5. All feature buttons are published subject to editorial control (see panel below).

Reuse of hotlinks

The web team will retain feature buttons after first use in the content management image library in order that the button can be re-used at a later date if desired.

Hotlinks may only be re-used on other web pages on the salford.gov.uk domain or the council's corporate intranet.

Reuse of hotlinks on other websites, including authorised Salford City Council websites, is not normally permitted. Exceptions can sometimes be made - please obtain a licence from the web manager, contact webmaster@salford.gov.uk if you wish to reuse a hotlink for an unauthorised application.

What to do next

To pre-book a hotlink placement, please contact Bernadette Mellor in the Web Team on 0161-793 3534 or email bernadette.mellor@salford.gov.uk.

To commission a hotlink, contact Paul McNamara in Creative Services on 0161-793 2441 or email paul.mcnamara@salford.gov.uk.

Editorial control

The design and content of all hotlink buttons is subject to the editorial control of the web content manager.

The web content manager will withdraw feature buttons if the referenced web pages do not contain appropriate complementary information of relevance to the current home page promotion.

Example: hotlink button promotes special refuse collection arrangements for Christmas/New Year but the referenced web page(s) make no mention of such arrangements.

Please note that hotlinks appearing on this website are © Salford City Council and may not be reproduced without a licence.
