Hide your visit

Please take a few minutes to read the information below and take steps to increase your safety when using the internet and this website.

This information may not completely hide your tracks, as some browser types have features that display recently visited sites. To ensure further safety, you may wish to consider accessing websites on a public computer, such as at a library, or possibly use a friend's system.

Email

If a perpetrator of abuse has access to your email account, they may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail. Remember to choose a password that the abuser will not guess, for example, avoid obvious passwords such as names and dates of birth.

If you receive abusive or threatening emails from an abuser, you should keep them and print them to use as evidence.

History / cache file

If an abuser knows how to read your computer's history or cache file, they may be able to see which sites you have accessed recently. You can clear your history or empty your cache file in your browser's settings.

panic button

Internet Explorer

  • Click the 'Tools' menu, then select 'Internet Options'
  • On 'General' tab, under 'Browsing History', click 'Delete' then 'Delete files' and 'Delete history'

Mozilla Firefox

  • Click the Tools menu, then select 'Options'
  • On the Privacy' tab, click 'clear your recent history'
  • Click the 'Advanced' tab then click 'Clear Now'

Forms

Many browsers are set up to remember form entries, which could be a problem if you use a search engine to find the site. For example, if someone searches for 'domestic abuse' on a search engine this entry is remembered by the browser. The next time somebody performs a search for a word beginning with the letter 'd' in that search engine, the words 'domestic abuse' will pop up as a suggested entry.

In Internet Explorer you can get around this by clicking on Tools and selecting Internet Options. Click on Content, select Auto Complete and 'Clear Forms'.

Remember, these actions will not guarantee complete safety. Panic buttons are available on other pages of this website, which when pressed, will return to the Salford City Council homepage. The back button can be pressed which will access the last domestic abuse page.
