High quality neighbourhoods

This driver provides the social and community basis for the framework. It will support the development of sustainable and thriving neighbourhoods with a diverse range of housing and excellent community facilities including schools, libraries, Children’s Centres and Fit City Centres. Investment in our town centres came top of the list during the youth consultations. Vibrant town and neighbourhood centres, with daytime and evening economies, will be developed by attracting new private sector investment and maximising planned public sector investment. Improvements to our transport corridors was seen as the top priority action by residents. Linear corridors, for many their introduction to Salford West, will be improved to provide a positive welcome to the area.
These 9 actions will develop high quality neighbourhoods:
A network of high quality neighbourhoods will see a range of thriving town and neighbourhood centres across the area. These are at the very heart of creating our prosperous future. They will increasingly become attractive destinations for leisure and services offering a wide range of shopping and community facilities, as well as daytime and evening leisure opportunities. Development of offices, residential areas and new projects including the £20 million investment in Eccles Magistrates Court, will drive the rejuvenation of these areas. (QN1)
Local centre connectivity will encourage people to walk, cycle and catch a bus/train to our local centres. Resident travel plans will outline what local neighbourhoods need in order to make this happen. Actions include supporting improvements to bus and rail services, improving routes for cyclists and pedestrians and supporting Metrolink expansion. (QN2)
Engaging the private sector in delivering more successful neighbourhoods will bring in new investment to the area. This could include residential, retail or office developments. Co-ordinating public and private investment will bring maximum benefits to communities. This will mean developing new working partnerships. (QN3)
Neighbourhood strategies will engage local communities and stakeholders in addressing local housing and community needs. Groups ranging from first time buyers to new families will be catered for by encouraging diversity and choice of housing. Investment in community assets and services, such as the investment in Children’s Centres and Gateway Centres, will ensure they are accessible to all residents. (QN4)
Regeneration of Local Authority housing estates with an investment of £205 million over the next five years. This catalyst for massive change in the area will not only enhance the quality of the local housing offer but also bring about wider improvements including improved quality of life for residents, more inclusive communities and new employment opportunities. (QN5)
Linear Corridors improvements will have a massive impact on the appearance of key road corridors, including the A57, A666 and A6. These windows on Salford will become more vibrant and attractive, sustaining local businesses. The first action plan focuses on the A57 with plans to revitalise other corridors in the future. (QN6)
Healthy and Fit will develop green space areas and leisure activities such as health walks and sports facilities in parks to create opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to get active. Over £4 million has recently been invested in Fit City Centres across this area. This will be followed by investment of £19.8 million in Gateway Centres in Walkden and Eccles. (QN7)
Reducing crime and changing perceptions will support residents in creating safe and inclusive communities. This will mean tackling crime and anti-social behaviour. There will be targeted support for families including parenting programmes. Increasing advice on safety and publicising reductions in crime will address crime and the fear of crime. (QN8)
Schools fit for the 21st century offers a unique opportunity to invest over £100 million through Building Schools for the Future in creating up to the minute secondary schools across Salford West. September 2008 will also see the opening of the brand new, state of the art, Harrop Fold High School. Potential investment in primary schools will also be pursued. (QN9)
