The centre also works closely in partnership with the Orthodox Jewish community to provide culturally sensitive and accessible children's centre services. Families from the Jewish community can access family support, play and learn, health visitor sessions and employment advice at the neighbouring Hershel Weiss Children and Family Centre and integrated childcare and early education provision for children aged up to four years at the independent Bnos Yisroel Primary School, which is also nearby.
The centre
As well as meeting rooms and other community facilities the children's centre has a play room for parent and toddler groups and a multi-use community room for adult learning sessions and other activities. The building also houses a resource centre where parents can borrow toys, story sacks and children's reading books.
The team
The centre has a small team of workers who organise stay and play sessions in the centre and provide services for any family with a child under the age of four that may require help, support or guidance on a range of matters, for example, welfare benefits, child behaviour, household routines etc. (referrals for this service can come from health workers and other professionals).
Health provision in the centre includes a regular well baby clinic offering baby weighing and immunisations by appointment. There is also a weekly Breastfeeding support group. Staff in the children's centre are trained in providing specialist help with speech and language and can deliver parenting support programmes. The centre also has close links with Jobcentre Plus and other local employment and training initiatives.
