Holocaust Memorial Day 2012
Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day of remembrance for the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides. Since 2001, 27 January has marked Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK. This date was chosen because it was on this day in 1945 that the largest Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated. Each year there is a national theme which provides a focus to the event. The theme for 2012 is Speak Up, Speak Out.
Salford City Council is proud to support events across the city to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. In 2012, we are promoting a wide range of activity taking place at Partners such as the Imperial War Museum North, Manchester Jewish Museum, and MediaCityUK. You can find full details by downloading our listings leaflet below.
The council is co-ordinating a public event which will occur on Wednesday 25 January, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Broughton Community Hub, 50 Rigby Street, Salford, M7 4BQ.
All Salford residents are invited to attend this commemorative event which will feature:
- A speech from Noemie Lopian, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.
- Members of the BBC Philharmonic who will perform movements from string quartets written by Pavel Haas (perished in Auschwitz, 1944) and Dmitri Shostakovich.
- Readings and memories that will provide an opportunity for reflection.
- An act of commemoration with eight candles lit and eight stones laid in remembrance of victims of the Holocaust and all subsequent genocides.
