Case studies
The Community Housing Development Team has worked hard to increase the number of properties offered by registered social landlords (RSL) for nomination from the council's housing register, making a difference to people's lives in Salford, increasing access and choice to housing.
A gentleman, who lost his home through a relationship breakdown and suffering extreme stress and anxiety at being unable to see his children as a result of him having no fixed address, was put forward for nomination*.
Within weeks of being nominated his life turned around and he has now been offered a two bedroom house in Higher Broughton. Before the nomination process was offered to him, he was bidding on properties without success and was giving up hope of finding a permanent home where his children could visit him.
The success of the plan and the impact on the lives of individuals has been achieved through the effort and commitment of the team by investing time in building rapport and relationships with our partner landlords at local and operational level, aswell as robust monitoring and evaluating of nominations on a monthly basis to ensure not just numbers but quality of offer. The team go the extra mile with people nominated for accommodation through personal contact and advice
For more information on where this fits in the wider strategic picture for reducing and preventing homelessness and increasing access and choice of accommodation please take a look at our Promoting Positive Prevention our Homelessness Strategy 2008-2013.
* The nominations process is where, through the local improvement plan, the local authority can put forward or nominate people from the general housing waiting list, to 50% of RSL homes that become available in the area.
