How the council's budget is funded
The council's gross costs are partially offset by service income including fees and charges made for the provision of our services and government grants specific to services. These specific grants include the dedicated schools grant providing funding for schools. The net costs, after taking account of service income is commonly known as the budget requirement. This requirement is funded from two main sources:
- The government via its revenue support grant and the redistribution of income collected from business rates and
- Council tax payers via the council tax charge levied by the council. The following table shows how much we will receive from each of these sources in 2010/11.
| Revenue source | Amount (million pounds) | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Council tax | £90.4m | 41.0% |
| Government - revenue support grant | £16.5m | 7.5% |
| Government - redistributed business rates | £113.7m | 51.5% |
