Industrial action

Update: No disruption to council services on Tuesday 14 October - strike suspended.

On Tuesday 14 October 2014, local government workers from across the UK will be on strike.

This means some council services will not be available. Full details of the services affected will be provided on this page as they become available.

Schools and local authority nurseries

Refuse collections

There may be no refuse collections on Tuesday 14 October.

General household waste collections to homes in Cadishead, Irlam, Little Hulton and Walkden will not be affected as black bin collections are not due that day.

If there are no collections please recycle all left-over food, including raw and cooked meat and pet food (as listed below), in your green food waste caddy or pink lidded bins which will be collected the following Tuesday (21 October).

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Dairy products, eg cheese or yoghurt
  • Leftovers from your meals
  • Rice, pasta, bread, cakes and pastries
  • Eggs and shells
  • Fish and meat - raw and cooked (including bones)
  • Tea bags and ground coffee
  • Pet food

Recycling bins (blue and brown for paper, cardboard, cans and glass will be collected on the next scheduled date, Tuesday 28 October.

Cemeteries

All cemetery grounds will be open but there will be no burials and cremations taking place on the day. All funeral directors and clergy have been informed.

Adult social care

All services may be disrupted, please check with the centre or service.

Contact Centre

The Contact Centre will be open but will be offering a reduced service. The switchboard will be available to deal with general enquiries.

For services that are not available a recorded message will be played advising of the industrial action and alternative solutions, such as online offerings. It will also give advice about what to do in case of an emergency.

Gateway centres

Gateway centres across the city are likely to be open but only for clinical appointments and some library services.

Registry office

The council's registry office will be offering a reduced service to register deaths.

Civic Centre reception

The main Civic Centre reception will be open but it is unlikely that Unity House reception will be open.
