Lower Irwell integrated urban drainage pilot

When we think about sources of flooding in Salford, most of us immediately think about river flooding. However, some parts of the city are affected by flooding from sewers that are at full capacity, surface water runoff after heavy rainfall and blocked drains and waterways. Flooding from these sources is less severe than river flooding, but can take place more often.
Flooding from sewers, surface water run-off and blocked drains is particularly difficult to manage because it involves several organisations who have responsibility for different aspects of the problem including local authorities, water companies, the Environment Agency and the Highways Agency.
The Department for Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has selected the city council along with Urban Vision, United Utilities, the Environment Agency, University of Sheffield and the city council's strategic development partners Countryside Properties and Miller Regeneration, to trial new working practices to develop solutions to overcome urban drainage flooding in the Lower Irwell Valley.
The Lower Irwell Valley Pilot is one of 15 pilots across England. DEFRA used the experiences gained in developing best practice guidance on urban drainage and surface water management.
More information about flooding is available on the DEFRA website.
