Issues raised
Themes were identified from comments and questions raised at numerous meetings and via queries and remarks from emails and feedback forms. These were categorised as:
Admissions
Issues were raised around who would be entitled to be enrolled at the school and what would happen if the school was over subscribed. Also individuals asked what would be the admissions criteria.
Curriculum
Questions were raised regarding how the Oasis’ ethos would affect the teaching of particular subjects? What specialisms would the Academy have? If GCSE’s, AS and A Levels would be the primary benchmarks of academic achievement, and what will the post 16 curriculum would consist of and who would decide on this?
Demographics
Concerns were raised about the future viability of the academy with the current trends in pupil numbers.
Funding
Many questions focused on how the academy will be funded.
Governance
Questions were asked as to the extent Oasis will involve parents in the running of the school.
Links with the local authority
Individuals asked if local authority services will be available to the academy.
Location
Negative and positive views were expressed about the location at Salford Quays.
Name
Individuals expressed the view that the new name of the academy should have a link to the name 'Hope'
Alternative options
Questions were asked as to what other options were available if the proposed academy does not go ahead.
Parental choice
Issued raised were around the reduction in the choice of local secondary schools and whether the academy would have a religious denomination.
Pastoral care
Questions were asked around Oasis' track record and experience with vulnerable young people.
Resources and facilities
Comments focused on the benefits of the new building and facilities, and the opportunities that these would bring.
Site
Individuals asked for clarification on what outdoor sports activities were being provided and why the new academy building was not being built on the existing high school site.
Staffing
Issues focused on pay and working conditions, recruitment, leadership and staff involvement in the planning of the academy.
Standards in education
Questions were asked about the academy and their ability to raise standards and improve academic results.
Timescale and transition
Concern was raised about any delay in opening the new academy and if the transition would affect GCSEs. It was also queried if extra funding would be available to assist with the transition.
Transport and travelling
Concerns were expressed about safe transport and travel options available to the proposed new academy site.
