Joan Kinghorn-Hooper

Former nurse Joan Kinghorn-Hooper realised that many people she treated in a London hospital became ill as a result of their work - and this led her to become interested in Environmental Health.

Joan really wanted to make a difference so she returned to college, re-trained and took a job in Salford - originally for just a few months, but a decade later Joan is still working for the city as Senior Environmental Health Officer.

"The people are great here, I like what I do - and every day is different," says Joan who works mainly in Broughton and Blackfriars on Health and Safety and Food Hygiene.

She found the thought of filming somewhat daunting, but in the end enjoyed the experience.

"I have four children so I have a big car, and so it was easier for all the film crew to travel with me. They used the opportunity to film in the car - it was a bit like taking a driving test! It was a bit of a shock seeing and hearing myself on TV - but the good thing is that some of my customers also got a shock being filmed and have improved their standards as a result!"
