Learning programme
Key stage 1
For Key Stage 1 pupils we have developed the "Lark Hill Live!" package:
We aim to bring the street to life for the children by introducing them to the colourful characters of Lark Hill Place, recreating the ambience of Victorian times.
Your class will be greeted at the entrance by our costumed guides who will talk about Victorian life and help your students discover what it was really like to be a Victorian by showing them 'Lark Hill Place' our reconstructed Victorian Street. The pupils will also take part in a hands-on Victorian washday demonstration.
Sessions have been designed to be structured yet informal and relaxed, so that the children have lots of opportunities to ask questions and interact with the guides.
Learning objectives: By the end of the session learners will:
- Have met and interacted with characters from Victorian times
- Be able to identify differences between ways of life at different time (ref. History NC KS1)
- Be able to ask and answer questions about the past (ref. History NC KS1)
This service is free but must be booked in advance. Please call 0161 778 0821 to arrange a visit.
Key stage 2
For Key Stage 2 pupils we have developed the "Time Detectives" package:
We aim to introduce students to the Victorian period using handling objects.
You will be greeted at the entrance by our guides who will deliver the first part of the session in the Victorian Gallery. This session focuses on historical enquiry, and the pupils will be asked to work in groups to try and identify some mystery objects. They will then be taken on a tour of our Victorian street to find out about their objects, and what life would have been like in Victorian times.
Learning objectives: By the end of the session learners will:
- Have handled and investigated Victorian objects
- Have learned about historical changes through studying appropriate range of sources of information (ref. History NC KS2)
- Be able to ask and answer questions, and to select information relevant to the focus of the inquiry (ref. History NC KS2)
This session has a small charge of £1.00 per child, with a minimum charge of £20.00 for smaller groups. This service must be booked in advance. Please call 0161 778 0821 to arrange a visit.
Self-guided tours
You are very welcome to bring a class on a free self-guided visit to the museum although no staff will be available to facilitate this session. This must be booked through the learning team on 0161 778 0821.
You can also reserve a room for lunches or to work with some of the museum's real and replica Victorian objects. If bringing several classes you will be asked to split the group, especially on the street where space is limited. Staff will not be in costume for these visits.
Size of group
We can only accommodate one class in the street (maximum 35) due to health and safety reasons. Larger groups can be split up, with part of the group visiting the other galleries. All groups must be accompanied by adults - we recommend a ratio of at least 1 to 10.
