YouthBank grantmaker information

Ever wondered who decides who gets the funding? If you’re aged 14-21 then you could! by becoming a YouthBank ‘grantmaker’
YouthBank is a Salford Youth Service project, which enables young people to decide how money should be spent on other young people in the local community.
What does a grantmaker do?
The main aim of YouthBank is to empower young people, enabling grantmakers to have a real say in the distribution of funding throughout the city of Salford. They also have the opportunity to drive all aspects of YouthBank's development , from the recruitment of staff, to deciding how the group should be run.
The main YouthBank group meet on Wednesday evenings at the Beacon Centre in Charlestown/Kersal, to make important decisions about the running of the group and also to receive training, attend activities and gain the opportunities to build their confidence and skills as grantmakers.
Young grantmakers meet regularly in their local area to assess and make decisions on funding applications received from other young people in Salford.
Young people who don't want to travel to the Beacon Centre, or those who aren't available every Wednesday can join their local 'Mini-YouthBank'
The confidence developed through YouthBank training will assist some young people to develop the skills to eventually become part of the Community Committee budget groups and/or the YouthBank UK regional Advisory Board.
Grantmakers have the opportunity to gain accreditation for their work (Duke of Edinburgh, Millennium Volunteers, or the OCN accredited Grantmaker Award)
Grantmakers are also involved in a number of leisure activities, cultural awareness activities, and team-building events.
YouthBank grantmakers (the 'grants panel') do much more than distribute funding. These are the things they have enjoyed about being involved in YouthBank:
- Residentials
- Helping others
- Getting to know more people
- Being part of a group
- Responsibility (independence, power)
- Working as a team
- Being able to choose which people receive what type of funding
- Getting the chance to make decisions
- The enthusiasm from local councillors – looking forward to meeting the Mayor!
