Help with childcare costs

There are a number of schemes and grants available to help cover the costs of your childcare.

Tax credits

Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit support families with children and working people on low incomes.

The Child Tax Credit is for families with one or more children, and is based on the household income. You do not have to be working to claim Child Tax Credit.

Working Tax Credit is for people who are in paid work and is made up of different elements.

The childcare element of the Working Tax Credit is to help with childcare costs for registered or approved childcare, and it can pay up to 80% of eligible childcare costs.

You may be able to get help through childcare element if:

  • You are a lone parent aged 16 years or over and work at least 16 hours a week
  • You are a couple and both aged 16 years or over and work at least 16 hours a week , or
  • One partner works at least 16 hours a week and the other is incapacitated; an in-patient in hospital or in prison
  • You are using registered or approved childcare

Lone parents

If you are a lone parent bringing up a child and your youngest is under 16 years old and you are not working or working less than 16 hours per week you could join New Deal for Lone Parents.

This is a Government programme designed specifically to help lone parents into work. You can arrange to see your New Deal for Lone Parents personal adviser for advice and information. Call the information line on 0800 868 868 or call in at your local Jobcentre or Jobcentre Plus office.

Care to learn

Care to learn funding is to help people under 20 years who are studying and caring for their own child.

You can find out more and apply through the Care to Learn? web site or you can contact your local Connexions service.
