Changing schools
Transferring to Secondary School
Pupils transfer from primary to secondary school in the September following their 11th birthday.
When your child is in Year 6 at the beginning of the autumn term you will be asked to complete a form indicating your preferred high school for transfer the following year. You can find out information about this process here.
How to apply for admission to a different type of school or in another area
If you wish your child to be admitted to an independent school you will need to contact the school concerned direct. They will tell you what to do next.
If you require your child to transfer from one primary school to another one, then discuss with the child’s current headteacher, and approach directly the school of your preference to check if they have any places available. If that school has no places available then you do have the right to appeal
If you wish your child to be admitted to a school outside Salford you should include your preference on your application form and return it to the Director of Education & Leisure.
Your application will then be forwarded to the respective LEA with your request.
Please note that in the case of Wigan LEA their timescale is different to Salford LEA therefore you will need to apply to the Education Department, Gateway House, Standishgate, Wigan WN1 1AE (Tel: Wigan 828925) as soon as possible.
If your child is successful in obtaining a place please let theAdmissions & Exclusion Team know as soon as possible by telephoning 0161 778 0413.
Changing schools at other times
Whether you are moving into Salford or moving to another part of the city you should first discuss the matter with both headteachers of the schools concerned. If you have any problem or require more information you should contact the Admissions and Exclusions Team, telephone 0161 778 0413.
You are welcome to make enquiries about Salford’s schools but your application will be considered on the basis of a current home address. For a change of address to be considered there must be some proof of renting or purchase to coincide with the application. This would usually be a utility bill such as Council Tax or electricity.
What happens if I change my address after I have been offered a place?
It is important to keep the school up-to date regarding change of circumstances, if a child has already been offered a place it will not be withdrawn if you then subsequently move address. Places may only be withdrawn if there has been fraudulent information provided prior to the offer of the school place being made.
