Bid summary

Salford City Council (the ‘Local Authority’) is proposing to establish a new primary school for 420 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 11 years. In addition there will be nursery provision for 60 full time equivalent 3 and 4 year olds.

The proposed new school will open on 1 September 2010 within a redevelopment area on the former Wheaters Crescent Housing Estate in Lower Broughton. It is linked to the proposed closure of Charlestown and North Grecian Street Primary Schools.

The proposed new school will seek to provide high quality learning provision for the whole community. It will be fully inclusive and will encompass the enhanced provision currently offered at North Grecian Street Primary for children with speech, language and communication difficulties.

Building on the strengths of the existing Charlestown and North Grecian Street Primary Schools, the proposed new school will ensure that the learning needs and preferred learning styles of all children are appropriately provided for. The curriculum offered will be rich and broad, encompassing the best creative approaches. The technology-rich environment will help all children to develop a love of learning, equipping them well for the challenges of the future. Offering the best in digital technology, the proposed new school will enable children, staff and the community to access learning resources appropriate for the 21st Century. By design, the proposed new school will be a safe learning environment of itself, offering pupils opportunities to experience, learn about and contribute to, environmentally-friendly living.

The admission arrangements for the proposed new school will be the same as those applied to other local authority schools, giving priority to those with medical and special or specific needs, brothers and sisters and based on distance from the school. Pupils on the roll of the predecessor schools will be offered places in the proposed new school. Assistance with travel for those pupils currently in the predecessor schools will be offered in accordance with Salford’s Home to School Transport Policy.

In addition to the nursery provision for 3 and 4 year olds, the proposed new school will offer full day childcare from 0 to 3 years. This will be delivered in the local community by existing childcare providers.

The proposed new school will offer fully extended services. It will be open from 8.00am to 6.00pm all year round. Signposting advice relating to health, family support, training and employment as well as childcare will be available. The proposed new school will become a focal point for the community, playing an important part in the regeneration of the area.
