Looked after children

Salford has set up the Care & Education Service to help improve the educational achievements of looked after children. We want to help everyone, no matter what their background, to make the most of their talents and help them to achieve their potential.

Who is in the Care & Education team?

  • Neelam Zaka (Team Manager)
  • Bridget Barrett (Care and Education Coordinator)
  • Cheryl Adamson (Key Worker)
  • Margaret Woodhall (Key Worker)
  • Yvonne Hickey (Key Stage 4 Key Worker)
  • Cath Elliot (Key Worker)
  • Christine Fraser (Key Worker)
  • Helen Blow (Admin Assistant)

As a team we provide:

  • Training and advice for colleagues from a variety of agencies/departments
  • Support individual children and young people (both in and out of Salford LEA)
  • Monitor educational provision and achievements of children in public care
  • Set up inter-agency initiatives
  • Implement government policies of Children in Public Care

How can we improve the life chances of looked after children?

There are a number of barriers that prevent children in care from achieving their educational potential and we believe the following actions will improve their life chances.

  • Greater stability – so that children in care do not have to move placements so often.
  • Less time out of school with help for admissions policies
  • Help with schoolwork – more individual support tailored for the child or young person along with training and advice for teachers.
  • Carers being made aware of issues to do with school and homework
  • Improved health and well-being with all concerned agencies working corporately

What has Salford done to help LAC?

In Salford there have been a number of initiatives in place since 1999 with regards to improving the educational achievements of Children in Public Care. September 2003 saw the introduction of the Care and Education Support Team.

The Care and Education Support Team works with a number of agencies across the city in particular with Salford’s children’s homes, foster carers, Social Services, schools and the young people themselves.

The Support Workers have a particular remit for working with young people who are in the care system. The Support Workers have been successful in engaging with young people and re-integrating them back into school and in providing appropriate support for them.

The Key Stage 4 Key worker has a remit for working with a cohort of young people who have been identified as having the potential to achieve 5 GCSEs grades A – C. There are specific booster classes being made available to aid this cohort in a bid to improve their core subjects.
