The national picture of looked after children

  • At any one time, around 60,000 children are in care within the UK
  • Most children – 80% enter care, because of abuse or neglect, or for family reasons
  • Less than 10% enter care because of their own behaviour
  • Two thirds live in foster care and 1 in 10 in children’s homes
  • One in four children in care lives outside their home local authority
  • Children in care have poor results in Key Stage tests at age 7,11 and 14. Just 1% go to university

The following table compares the educational attainment of children who have been continuously looked after for at least 12 months in Salford with the numbers at the national level.

Pupil numbers are actual figures and the pass figures are percentages of these original figures. (Figures cover the 12 month period between school years - i.e. Sept - Sept)
