Education welfare service
We provide help, advice and support to those children and their families who are experiencing difficulties with education.
We support schools by:
- Working in partnership with schools in developing strategies to raise attendance
- Providing advice about implementation of school based strategies like effective registration procedures
- Receiving attendance referrals and providing advice and guidance
- Improving school contact time through register checks, liaison visits or telephone support
- Developing partnerships between home and school
- Facilitating case conferences and other meetings
- Giving advice and support on child protection matters
- Providing training and other school related activities
- Referring children, whose poor school attendance is attributed to ill health, to the Community Paediatrician
- Using statistical analysis as a means of targeting resources and identifying specific school related issues
We support families and pupils by:
- Monitoring the progress of Looked After Children and targeting the appropriate support
- Making home visits to help parents with school attendance problems
- Working directly with pupils to solve difficulties affecting their attendance or education
- Helping to place pupils out of, or not accessing, provision - and monitoring progress
- Helping parents to understand their rights and responsibilities within the education law
- Acting as a link between home and school when communication has broken down
- Providing a link with other agencies on behalf of families
- Advising and assisting with the provision of free school meals and clothing
- Providing information on education otherwise
- Issuing permits for pupils, part time employment and entertainment licences
- Formulating partnerships with other agencies to provide support for vulnerable pupils
