Different types of exclusion
There are three types of exclusion:
- permanent exclusion
- fixed term exclusion
- lunchtime exclusion
Permanent exclusion
Permanent exclusion means that your child can no longer attend the school. If your child has been permanently excluded, Salford Local Authority will provide your child with alternative education usually at a pupil referral unit from the 6th day of the exclusion.
The school will have a governing body meeting to discuss your child's exclusion. This meeting will include the school governors, you as the parent/carer and your child, a representative from the Local Authority and the headteacher. You may also bring a friend or representative along with you.
The governors are there to decide whether to agree with the headteachers decision to exclude your child. If the governors agree you will be offered the right of appeal. If the governors dont agree your child will be re-instated back into the school. There could be circumstances where this is not appropiate, if this happens, your child will be re-instated into another school.
Fixed term exclusion
Fixed term exclusions can be for a minimum of half a day and upto a maximum of 45 school days in one school year. If your child has been excluded, the school will provide alternative education from day 6 of the exclusion until it ends.
If your child's exclusion is for 16 school days or more (either in one exclusion, reaching a total of 16 days in any one term) the school must arrange a governing body meeting. If your child is excluded for less than 16 school days, a meeting will not be arranged unless you request one.
The governors are there to decide whether to agree with the headteachers decision to exclude your child. If the governors agree there is no right of appeal. If the governors don't agree your child will be re-instated back into the school providing the exclusion hasnt already been served. If the exclusion has already been served then the governors' decision will be noted on his/her school records.
Lunchtime exclusion
Lunchtime exclusions are recorded as a half day exclusion, for example if your child was excluded for 5 lunchtimes this would be recorded as 2.5 days exclusion.
If your child's exclusion record totals 16 or more school days in any one term, the school will arrange a governing body meeting. They would not automatically hold a meeting if the exclusion was less than 16 school days. You can request a meeting and this will be considered by the governors.
