Glossary of types of school and school terms
Local Education Authority
The Local
Education Authority (LEA) is part of Salford City Council and provides educational opportunities for
all members of the community.
Primary schools
Schools for children
aged from four to eleven years.
Infants schools
Schools for children
aged from four to seven years.
Junior schools
Schools for children
aged from seven to eleven years.
Secondary schools
Schools for children
aged from eleven to sixteen years.
Reception classes
These are the
“first year” classes in primary or infants' schools which children enter at the age of four.
Community and Voluntary Aided schools
Both
sorts of school are maintained by the Council, but voluntary aided schools have an independent foundation
– often religious – and in those schools the governing body not the Director of Education has final
control over admissions.
Special schools
Special schools
are for children who have a particular special educational need – for example, a physical disability
– which cannot be provided for in an ordinary school. Each special school has its own age limits.
Key Stage 1
The three-year phase
of education experienced by pupils aged five to seven, although a minority may be slightly younger or
older.
Key Stage 2
The four year phase
of education experienced by pupils aged seven to eleven, although a minority may be slightly younger
or older.
Key Stage 3
The four year phase
of education experienced by pupils aged twelve to fourteen, although a minority may be slightly younger
or older.
Key Stage 4
The four year phase
of education experienced by pupils aged fifteen to sixteen, although a minority may be slightly younger
or older.
SATS
‘Standardised Attainment Tests’.
Pupils sit tests in English, Mathematics and Science at the end of Key Stage 1, 2 and 3. These
tests measure their progress in these subjects.
Governing Bodies
All primary schools
have a governing body made up of council representatives, parents, teachers, school staff and people
from the community. The governing body of a school decides, within certain guidelines, how the school
will be run, which staff will work there, how the school spends its money and what pupils will learn.
Parents' views are important so let your governors know what you think. You can find out more about
the role of governors from the Governor Services - on 0161 778 0265 or email governor.services@salford.gov.uk
Admission Forum
An Admissions Forum
has been established by Salford City Council to consult and discuss all issues arising from proposed
admission arrangements.
Inspector-Advisers
There is a team
of inspectors-advisers who provide support and challenge to schools. Each school is linked to a particular
inspector-adviser, who has responsibility for promoting high standards, monitoring and evaluating the
effectiveness of the school. The Inspection and Advisory Service also provides in-service training for
headteachers, teachers and classroom support workers.
