What to do if you have a complaint or problem about school

Most problems and misunderstandings can be sorted out quickly by talking to your child’s class teacher or the headteacher. Ask for a time that is convenient to you both. Hopefully the problem can be resolved at this point.

If you are not happy with the response you receive make an appointment to speak to the headteacher.  Before you go to the meeting with the headteacher think about what you want as an outcome. This could be an apology, action to be taken or both. If after meeting with the headteacher you remain unhappy ask for a copy of the schools complaint procedure.

Once you have a copy of the complaints procedure you will know that the next stage is to make a formal written complaint to the Chair of Governors. Your complaint will then be investigated.

Information about how your child’s school deals with complaints should appear in the school prospectus/information to parents. You can obtain a copy of the complaints procedure from the school.

If you would like advice about the complaints process you can contact the Customer First Officer for Children’s Services on 0161 778 0480.

The Advisory Centre for Education also offers advice on many topics, including bullying, special educational needs and school admission appeals. The advice line number is 0808 800 5793. Monday to Friday between 2pm – 5pm.
