Consumer education: information for teachers in primary schools
Salford Primary Schools Education Programme
The Trading Standards service has established an education programme for primary schools throughout Salford.
It is intended that participation in this programme will educate and inform young consumers of the future.
The topics covered are of cross curricular interest covering a wide range of subject matter.
The children are provided with packs containing useful leaflets for themselves and their parents. These are given prior to our visit to the school so that the children may prepare for the sessions. The packs also contain leaflets for the children to give to their parents together with copies of our Trading Standards Spotlight newsletter.
At the end of each session the children are given a quiz on the work already covered. If they have finished their work exercises before other members of the class they can start the quizzes right away, if not they can be completed at the teacher's discretion.
At the end of the programme each child is given a certificate signed by the Chief Trading Standards Officer for Salford to show that they have completed the education programme.
See below to view details of the separate sessions and the leaflets linked to them.
If your school is interested in participating in this scheme contact Sue Pardy, Senior Fair Trading Officer on 0161-925 1053 or email sue.pardy@salford.gov.uk
- Session 1
Concentrates on several aspects of the work of trading standards and the teacher is asked to prepare the children by reading through the relevant leaflets. - Session 2
Concentrates on the safe design of toys and the children experience first hand the use of some of the testing equipment designed to ensure that the toys sold are safe for children to play with. They discuss the value of good design and examine several toys, presenting their findings at the end of the session.
