European Computer Driving Licence

The European Computer Driving Licence® (ECDL) is an internationally recognised qualification which enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills.
ECDL is designed for those who wish to gain a qualification in computing to enable them to develop their IT skills - no prior knowledge of IT or computer skills is needed to study ECDL.
The ECDL syllabus is designed to cover the key concepts of computing, practical applications and their use in the workplace and society.
The Benefits of ECDL are:
- Raises the level of competency in IT and computing skills
- Improves productivity at work
- Enables employers to invest more effectively in IT
- Provides the individual with a worldwide recognised qualification
- Ensures best practice and good quality standards
The ECDL Syllabus is designed by the ECDL Foundation and managed and promoted in the UK by the British Computer Society (BCS).
There are seven modules which make up the ECDL syllabus:
- Basic concepts of IT
- Using the computer and managing files
- Word processing
- Spreadsheets
- Database
- Presentation
- Information and Communication
A logbook is used to monitor progress through the modules, and all seven modules (exams) must be passed before an ECDL certificate is awarded.
The modules may be taken in any order and the qualification may be taken over a three year period - thus offering maximum flexibility. Each module is assessed by a practical test which lasts for 45 minutes and is competency based.
As each of the modules is passed, they are certified by the Accredited Test Centre. When all seven modules have been successfully completed, the logbook is returned to the British Computer Society who issue a certification pack.
If you have passed the ECDL qualification, why not further your qualifications by trying one (or all) of the ECDL Advanced modules. For further information about either the ECDL or the ECDL Advanced, select the appropriate link.
