Next Step Project

The Next Step Project is the leaving care service for young people, aged sixteen through to twenty one, who have been in care.

Young people who have lived with foster carers or in residential care may not have had the opportunity to develop all the skills they will need to live independently. The Next Step Project works with all these young people to help them to move on towards independence

What do we do?

Each young person is allocated a worker who will help them to prepare for moving on from care and enable that person to access employment and education. We will also help that person to find somewhere to live.

Each young person is involved in preparing their own pathway plan which concentrates on life skills development and looks to enable young people to become independent. The plan might include budgeting, housing, health, education, leisure and looks at where they want to be and what they want to be doing in five years.

We also have specialist workers who work with young people on issues such as substance mis-use and tenancy support.

Award Winning Team

In 2005 The Next Step Project was nominated for the annual Community Care Awards for the second year running and were pleased to hear that they were selected as winners in the "Improving Life Chances For Looked After Children" category.

Work with young people is done both on a one to one basis and in groups. The team also offer a duty service between 8:30 and 4:30 Mondays and Fridays and 11:30 and 3:30 Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays to deal with emergencies if the young persons worker is not available.
