Code of behaviour

Code of behaviour common to all courses involving young people

Principles

Lledr Hall is a residential Outdoor Education Centre run by Salford City Council. The centre operates in accordance with all current legislation which demands a high standard of provision for this specialised area of education.

Lledr Hall OEC encourages course participants to take a full and active part in their learning. The learning sessions involve a range of outdoor adventurous activities which are provided at an appropriate and achievable level so as to maximise the positive learning benefits.

To achieve this, an appropriate level of personal responsibility must be agreed with parents and participants prior to the commencement of the course at Lledr Hall.

Guidelines, which focus on specific aspects of behaviour and personal responsibility, are provided in the Educational Trips and Visits Health and Safety Guidance Notes for use by course leaders. (see appendix 6:‘Management of Young People’).

The behaviour policy

Supplementing the above guidelines, LHOEC has a fair and positive discipline policy which aims to agree physical and social boundaries with all groups using the centre.

This beneficial agreement is successfully achieved by centre staff creating an atmosphere of support and encouragement where all positive actions by young people are praised.

During their course young people are encouraged to take on more responsibility for their own learning. This takes place throughout all aspects of their course, but we place particular emphasis on personal responsibility in terms of personal health and hygiene, communal living and domestic duties, assessing personal risk, and punctuality.

The policy applied

The centre uses a child-centred approach, which has been created to promote good interpersonal skills, increase personal motivation, boost self-confidence. This approach expects that, during their course participants will respect others, themselves, and the environment.

If, during their course, a young person fails to adopt this policy, and, as a consequence, is having a detrimental affect on the personal safety, health and general well-being of others, sanctions, which will be agreed with their accompanying staff, will be made.

These sanctions are likely to involve one or more of the following:

  • Reduction in the amount of free/social time.
  • Involvement in tasks to make-good any damage caused.
  • Being unable to take part in some aspects of the activity programme.
  • Being taken home early from the course.
  • Parents/guardians and Head teachers will always be informed of any unacceptable behaviour.
