Bookstart
The Bookstart project brings books and babies together!
Bookstart is a national project for 0 -4 year olds based on the belief that it is never too early to introduce books to children. Giving babies an early introduction to books has many positive effects, including becoming three times more likely to enjoy reading when they start school!
Bookstart aims to give every child a lifelong love of books and the very best start on their reading journey. Babies enjoy looking at pictures, listening to the sound of a familiar voice, rhythm and rhyme and playing with books.
The Bookstart project is now running throughout Salford, with Bookstart officers working in the following areas:
- Broughton
- Irlam and Cadishead
- Little Hulton
- Ordsall and Blackfriars
- Seedley, Langworthy and the Precinct
- Swinton
- Winton and Peel Green.

The response to Bookstart has been extremely positive:
“I really wouldn’t have thought to read a book to a baby but he turns the pages and really seems to enjoy them. The scheme has really opened my eyes to how babies absorb everything they are shown.”
