Book Award 2007

Breathe: a ghost story

Schoolchildren across Salford have voted Breathe by Cliff McNish as their favourite book of 2007.

The shortlist for the 2007 Award was:

  • Livi Michael: The Angel Stone
  • Michael Morpurgo: Alone on a Wide Wide Sea
  • Marcus Sedgwick: My Swordhand is Singing
  • Alex Shearer: Tins
  • Ali Sparkes: Finding the Fox
  • Cliff McNish: Breathe: a Ghost Story
  • Lauren St John: The White Giraffe

Mr McNish was presented with the Salford Children's Book Award at a ceremony at The Lowry on 25 January after beating six other books up for the prize.

For the past few months pupils from ten high schools have been reading the titles which were shortlisted for the awards by the children, librarians and English teachers.

Among the shortlisted books was award-winning Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo, author of Private Peaceful which was read by thousands of people during Salford City Council's 'We are reading IN Salford' scheme last autumn.

A selection of pupils took to the stage at the ceremony to discuss what they liked about each of the nominated books and one lucky pupil read out the winning book.

This year's awards was presented by children's writer, Alan Gibbons, winner of The Blue Peter Book Award in 2000 for his best selling book Shadow of the Minotaur. The pupils were also treated to a book signing from the well known children's author.

Now in its fifth year, the Salford Children's Book Award is designed to put the fun back into reading among 11 to 14 year olds while introducing them to a range of books and authors.

Rachel, 12, from St Patrick's RC High School said: "I voted for Breathe to win the book award. I loved the illustrations which added to the spookiness, but it's the author's skill with words that make the book such an effective ghost story. I enjoyed it very much and it really deserved to win."

The award is run by the city council's Schools’ Library Service.

Councillor Barry Warner, lead member for culture and sport at the city council said: "All of the books are great reads and I think the children have done very well to pick their winner. I'd like to thank everyone involved in making the event a success.

"It was a delight to see so many young people enthusiastic about reading and it's not very often that children get the chance to meet the authors of their favourite books."
