School visits to Ordsall Alive!

School group at OrdsallOrdsall Hall

Ordsall Hall is a magnificent black and white half timbered Tudor manor house located in the heart of Salford. Fully furnished with 17th Century furniture and exhibits, the Hall stands impressively in its own grounds and makes an ideal venue for school children to learn all about Tudor Life in an authentic and easily accessible location.

At Ordsall Hall we are striving to provide a complete interactive learning experience.

We are delighted to announce that Ordsall Hall's education service (Ordsall Alive!) has recently been awarded a Sandford award. This is a quality assurance mark which is only awarded after all aspects of the service have been inspected by a judge from the Heritage Education Trust.

Ordsall Alive!

Ordsall Alive! is a comprehensive service for schools who visit Ordsall Hall. Your group will be welcomed by guides, dressed in Elizabethan clothes, with the enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to help children discover everything there is to know about the Tudors. Be it living habits, working lives, royal connections, travel, customs or battles ... it can all be explored at Ordsall Hall.

We have developed a hands-on experience where children are encouraged to feel, discuss and explore various Tudor objects that are no longer around today. Children are not simply given a list of facts - but will be encouraged to discover, investigate, try out and experience a whole range of learning opportunities that can only be experienced in the Hall’s unique setting.

Ordsall Alive! is a full day workshop developed for schools studying the Tudors. Sessions run from 10am to 3pm and include facilities for children to eat packed lunches in the Hall. Shorter workshops may also be booked, but only one workshop will take place each day. We strongly recommend that only one class attend each workshop. To comply with fire regulations we have a statutory maximum of 40 pupils on site at any one time.

Workshops are subsidised by Salford City Council and, at just £2.50 per pupil, offer great value for money. We make a minimum charge of £50 per day for smaller classes of less than 23 pupils, but teachers and helpers come along free. Payment is made on the day.

If you are a Salford school you can come to the Hall for just £2.00 per pupil, with a minimum charge of £50.

All you need to do to reserve your workshop is to book online here or phone us directly on 0161 872 0251 during opening hours (Mon-Fri 10am-4pm). You need to book several months in advance because of the popularity of Ordsall Alive! Workshops.

In brief:

  • Full day workshops including an area to eat packed lunches
  • Costumed guides throughout the day for all activities
  • Hands-on sessions with period exhibits and artefacts
  • Activities which may include archery, Tudor games, costumes, brass rubbings
  • Only £2.50 per pupil (£50 minimum charge) with staff and helpers free
  • Maximum of 40 pupils per day
