Educational programme

Key Stage 1

For key stage 1 pupils we have developed the "Lark Hill Live!" package:

Here we aim to bring the street to life for your pupils by introducing them to the colourful characters of Lark Hill Place, recreating the ambience of Victorian times.

Your class will be greeted at the entrance by one of our guides who will tell them about their life on the street and help them discover what it was really like to be a Victorian. Sessions have been designed to be informal and relaxed, so that the children have lots of opportunities to ask questions and interact with the guides. The guides will also pass round handling objects to feel and explore in greater detail.

This service is free but must be booked in advance. Please call 0161 778 0821 to arrange.

How we Shopped!:
A brand new Key Stage 1 session for schools at Salford Museum and Art Gallery

Using role-play, photographs and group activities children will  look at shopping today, shops throughout the world and how we pay for our shopping.

The session will cost £1.00 per pupil with a minimum charge of £20.00 forsmaller groups. Morning and afternoon sessions can be booked. For more information or to book a session please call 0161 778 0821.

Key Stage 2

For key stage 2 pupils we have developed the "Time Detectives!" package:

This session focuses primarily on historical enquiry. Beginning in the Victorian Gallery your pupils will be curators for the session and will be invited to examine various Victorian objects to try and identify them. They will then be taken onto our Victorian street where they are met by costumed interpreters who will help them find clues about the objects and show them around the street. Finally, the children will return to the Victorian Gallery to discuss their findings.

These sessions run on Mondays from 10am - 12pm and 1pm - 3pm and cost £1 per child with a minimum charge of £20 for smaller groups. This service must be booked in advance. Please call 0161 778 0821 to arrange.

Self-guided tours

You are very welcome to bring a class on a free self-guided visit to the museum although no staff will be available to facilitate this session. This must be booked through the learning team on 0161 778 0821.

You can also reserve a room for lunches or to work with some of the museum's real and replica Victorian objects. If bringing several classes you will be asked to split the group, especially on the street where space is limited. Staff will not be in costume for these visits.

Size of group

We can only accommodate one class in the street (maximum 35) due to health and safety reasons. Larger groups can be split up, with part of the group visiting the other galleries. All groups must be accompanied by adults - we recommend a ratio of at least 1 to 10.
