Jack Straw visits Salford allotment site
Rt Hon Jack Straw MP, Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor, recently made an impromptu visit to one of Salford’s top allotments to gain an insight into the work carried out by a team of voluntary workers from the Probation Service.
Mr Straw toured the Tindall Street allotments in Eccles to see the excellent work that has been undertaken by the volunteers which has included the creation of a new community plot in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum as part of the “Dig for Victory” campaign.
Mr Straw was very impressed with the site, which is managed by Steve Dennison of Salford City Council's Grounds Maintenance Service and took time out to speak to as many of the people behind the project as possible.
Mayor pays a visit to Destructor
On 4 May 2008, former Salford Mayor Valerie Burgoyne payed a special visit to Destructor allotments to meet members of the Swinton and District Allotments and Leisure Gardeners Association.
Despite the terrible weather, the Mayor thoroughly enjoyed her visit and over £75.00 was also raised towards a memorial garden in Buile Hill Park for the late Tommy Holmes, former secretary of the Swinton and Pendlebury Horticultural Society.
